What a way to begin the new year! We have kick started the year with great momentum. Two Sundays' ago, MUFC had their first ever friendly match of the year against Ztec's second team at Red Crescent! It was good to get the excitement fuelling up again!

Warming up!
After almost a month long break from floorball, the friendly match served more as a wake-up call than anything else. It was meant to get the momentum going, the passion burning and the muscles working! It was really nice to have everyone back together again after the semester holiday. Everyone came with a certain readiness to ensure that the team starts off well this year.

James in action!
We had a couple of new faces in our team this year. We want to take this opportunity to welcome David and James as they are now officially part of MUFC! Welcome into the family! It's good to have them with us for the friendly as well. James did particularly well guarding the goal with his unmistakable yellow jersey top! David played well too and even scored a penalty. Awesome stuff guys!

Overall, it was a really good first outing of the year for MUFC. There are definitely a lot more things to work on more as a team as we approach PFL Division II 2010. Let's continue to be committed to the club and to our team mates. Keep up the good work, team!

The floorball scene in Penang, or in Malaysia for that matter, witnessed another inaugural competition this year with "The Rising Star Floorball Challenge 2009", and Minden UniHawks had the privilege to be part of it!

The competition was split into two categories, women and open. Three of our ladies participated in the women's category. Wai Wai and Dawn teamed up with other women from team Contact while Sarah decided to go on loan for her ex-school, Methodist Girls School. Wai Wai and Dawn, under the team name called "Hybrid Sugar and UniHawks", came in second! Both did really well in their respective positions! At the other end, Sarah, who played for "G-12", took up a totally different role - she forgo her stick and instead, put on the helmet of a goalkeeper and was even voted as an All-Star goalkeeper! So to the women of UniHawks, keep it up! Keep floorballing!

The Open category saw UniHawks sending one team under the name "Minden Titanium", consisting of only 7 players (including goalkeeper)! But considering the fact that we had a rather small number of players, we did EXTREMELY well! John, who managed the team superbly, played a solid defending role alongside Gary, the captain for the team. Newcomer Michael played as if he was like a veteran! Great confidence and great talent from this guy! Daniel and Jeck, both were very hardworking in their positions. Rish, the marksman for UniHawks never let the team down! And of course, we have our goalkeeper, Dawn, who was the rock behind the defenders!
As a team, they played extremely well. Movements were quick, creative, and penetrative. Defenders learnt to take the men instead of ball-watching. With all their effort put in, they earned a well-deserved second spot! Congratulations!!! First or second, it doesn't really matter, what matters is how you guys play as a team and how you guys push each other as a team.

Not only did our team won second placing but also, two of our players were voted to be in the All-Star team! Dawn Tan, our ever cheerful goalkeeper who played superbly and who saved the penalty shoot-out against Contact, earned her spot in the All-Star team. Rish, the fast and tricky forward of UniHawks proved that he was a deadly marksman and earned himself a spot too. Congratulations to the both of you! Keep it up!

Congratulations to all UniHawks who played their hearts out in the competition! :)

It's great to see you guys pushing and improving yourselves to a greater level. Remember, don't just push the limit, break the limit! Improvement may seem to grow just a little at a day, but your efforts will never go in vain. Never give up, team! Never give up!

The Penang League 2009 Division 1 has finally come to an end. Almost two months of non-stop action!  MUFC had the privilege of closing the league with the final match against the fearsome and the eventual champions of the league, Ztec 8cers. It's never an easy task going up against a team like Ztec. Individually skilled and as a team, they are deadly. However, MUFC took the match as a privilege and a learning process.

MUFC coach, Christopher Koh, decided to play a 3-1-1 strategy, an obvious defensive play. According to him, the match wasn't much about scoring goals but more so, of reducing the score line, go "damage control" as he said.

The first half saw them going extremely deep in defence, granting the Ztec players ample space and time to shoot at their own liking. Most of the goals scored by Ztec were from a distance, not their usual slick passes here and there. MUFC were extremely tight in the centre, hence, Ztec's inability to put the goals in through their usual quick passes. However, their downfall was just that. They played way to tight in the centre, allowing their opponents to play around them from the sides.

The second half saw them pushing slightly higher than the first. However, it wasn't enough and it was a little too late. But it's not all that bad as MUFC still did manage to score a goal past Ztec albeit the huge loss. Christopher who played in central defence picked up a loose ball and made a quick run up front on the left wing. Noticing his counterpart, JJ up front at the opposite wing, he managed to release a pass to him enough for him to reach and slot it pass Ztec's goal. Rish and Sarah, who both played up front also had several attempts at goal both in the first and the second half. Great effort from both the forwards!

At the end of the night, the score board stood at 18-1. Yes, it is a big score line. But hope is not at all lost.

MUFC is determined to work as a team, to build a team and to win as a team. Yes, we had a hard time in this year's league but it wasn't all that bad. We learnt more about the game, we learnt more about each other, we learnt to work and motivate each other as a team. If this is what we need to go through to build a strong positive team, then it's all going to worthwhile.
